Through Maidstone Engineering, Maxitrak are pleased to announce that we are able to supply drawings from the Greenly Archive. This is a most important collection of drawings dating from the beginning of live steam miniature railways over a century ago.

Most enthusiasts recognise Greenly’s role in designing large 15” gauge locomotives for the likes of the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway and the Ravenglass and Eskdale line. Starting in the early 1900’s he also worked on many designs from Gauge 1 to 10 ¼”. Many of these designs are associated with the Bassett Lowke company, who he worked with over many years.

When Greenly died just after the second war his work was continued by Earnest Steel and his wife Eleanor (Greenly’s daughter). The net result is more or less three peoples lifetime work on miniature locomotive design, including an amazing variety of types. They range from Stockton and Darlington Railway “Locomotion” to the LMS steam turbine engine, including a 4-8-2-+2-8-4 six cylinder Garrett, American and French designs a “Model Engineer” traction engine and a two stroke petrol engine. There are no less than seventeen designs in 7 ¼” gauge, thirteen in 5”, fifteen in 3 ½” and eighteen in 2 ½” gauges, plus a range of ancillary items in each size.

Some of these designs are complete and detailed down to the last item, others are more vague and rely on the builder being able to make components off a general layout or from one of the standard parts drawings. Some are just a general arrangement drawing and if you are lucky a half chassis plan and an end elevation. A single cylinder drawing appears to be used for a number of different designs, this makes sense if the cylinder is basically the same. However most of the time this is the Greenly double port piston valve cylinder, the complication of which had Earnest Steel making updated slide valve drawings, added to the design at a later date.

This will give some insight in to the complications of archiving this extensive set of drawings, in the fifty odd years since the design work was finished there are inevitably some gaps in the drawing sets. No doubt model engineers somewhere have sets that may fill the missing sheets, for the sake of completion of this important archive I would ask enthusiasts to have rummage through their drawing sets to see if they can find the following items:

In 7 ¼” gauge;
RS 29, from the Royal Scott
LL 707 and LL711 from the 2-2-2 Lady of the lake
MRC 10 and MRC 11 from the Midland compound 4-4-0.
BL 103,113, 115, 122, 123, 125, 128, 132, and 147 from the Bullied Pacific.
SC2 from the Southern Schools
AH 3, AH 18 and AH 22 from the American 4-8-4
H 565/4, H 565/5, H565/10 and H 565/11 from the Great Central 4-6-0 Immingham
BP 14, 17, 19, 21, 22, 25 from the Garrett.

In 5” Gauge
AU 7 from the austerity 2-8-0

In 3 ½”Gauge
GN 2 and possibly GN 4 from the “industrious” saddle tank.
(This is not the same as the GN series drawings for the LNER pacific.)
Drawing 680/1, freelance pacific.

There are a number of designs with just a GA and end elevations, I would be interested to hear if any one has more build details on the following engines.
Caledonian 4-4-0, LSWR 4-6-0, Southern West Country, LNWR 2-2-2 Cornwall,
London Tilbury and Southend 4-4-2 tank, Midland compound 4-4-0,
2-8-2 freelance freight engine, GWR Great Bear 4-6-2.

All the 2 ½” engines are GA only though there are odd cylinder drawings as well.

The Model Engineer traction engine only has a modified sheet three (gearing) though this one should be easy to find as it was published in the ME in 1935.

At the other end of the scale the 15” Ravenglass and Eskdale 2-8-2 is an incomplete set of only eighteen drawings while the 15” three cylinder LNER Pacific has over fifty. Though this pacific also lacks a general arrangement drawing.

As you can see from the above this is a complicated subject! There is inconsistency in the drawing numbers particularly with the Steel drawings. Some of these drawings may have never existed or may be just very small details.

The early drawings in particular are a work of art in their own right and would look good framed on the wall rather than being used on the workbench. To this end we anticipate offering reduced size prints of the more visually appealing drawings in addition to the normal full size prints.
